  107. INSTALLATION

  109. VendView uses the standard installation conventions of Windows programs.
  110.  
  111. To install the VendView viewer, simply execute the SETUP.EXE program that
  112. is provided as part of the package.  This can be done by double-clicking
  113. on SETUP from a Windows Program or File Manager or Win95 Folder or
  114. Explorer, or by Selecting File Run from such a program and entering the
  115. full pathname of the SETUP program.

  117. If you're installing VendView from a diskette, just run the SETUP
  118. program from that diskette drive (perhaps the path would be A:\SETUP).
  119. If you've temporarily copied or "unzipped" all the files to your hard
  120. drive, you should run the SETUP program there, and remember to delete the
  121. temporary files after the installation is done.

  124. QUICK START
  125.  
  126. For a really quick start, just use VendView to look at the VENDINFO
  127. files that have been installed with VendView itself.  In the VendView
  128. installation directory, you should find both a VENDINFO.DIZ file and a
  129. VENDVIEW.DOZ file.  VENDINFO.DIZ is an example of the normal DIZ
  130. ("Description In Zip") file that accompanies software products.
  131. VENDVIEW.DOZ is an example of the more extensive DOZ ("Description Out
  132. of Zip") file that can carry multimedia information, CD-ROM installation
  133. information, and other useful extensions.

  135. For the best quick look at VendView, use the VendView File Open command
  136. to load the VENDVIEW.DOZ file.  Then you can just explore the various
  137. displayable topics using the main toolbar.  In particular, use the
  138. "Demonstration" button or the View Demo command to view the various
  139. dynamic demonstrations that tell about the VENDINFO system and about
  140. VendView.

  142. The context-sensitive help system helps you to use VendView, but it also
  143. provides quite a bit of additional information about software
  144. distribution and packaging, contacting publishers, and other relevant
  145. matters.  Just press F1 or Alt-H for help.

  148. VendView AS A HELPER APPLICATION FOR WORLD-WIDE-WEB BROWSERS
  149.  
  150. It is a relatively simple matter to install VendView as a helper
  151. application for Netscape, and perhaps other WWW browsers.  Simply define
  152. "x/vendinfo" as a new Mime type, and associate it with both the VendView
  153. application and with the filename extensions "DIZ" and "DOZ".  If
  154. needed, detailed instructions can be obtained from the Rams' Island
  155. Software Website at

  159. This will cause VendView to be invoked automatically as a viewer if you
  160. download VENDINFO files from ftp sites (even if they're downloaded via
  161. the World-Wide Web).  We're working on obtaining a generally recognized
  162. "vendinfo" mime type, so this will also work automatically for downloads
  163. that come directly from web (i.e., http) sites.

  166. UNINSTALL

  168. Should you desire to uninstall VendView, simply remove the directory in
  169. which you installed VendView, along with the entire contents of that
  170. directory, and remove the icon (and the VENDINFO program group or folder,
  171. if it is then empty) from your Program Manager or Win95 Programs folder.

  173. VendView uses several DLLs and a VENDVIEW.INI file, but they are
  174. installed in the VendView directory, so their installation and later
  175. removal should have no effect on any other applications you may have on
  176. your computer.
